"War is so terrible..."

"It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it," General Robert E. Lee's comment to Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, on seeing the immense slaughter of Union troops charging Marye's Heights in the Battle of Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862.  It serves as a commentary on the addiction to conflict and the need for humanity to be repulsed by its costs.
